It’s cheaper to be vegetarian
Annual food product inflation has reached 8.4% - the highest since records began in 1986 - according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The main driver behind the soaring costs is the rising price of meat in reaction to the increasing cost of animal feed that farmers have incurred this winter so it’s bad news for us non-vegetarians!
According to research from the price comparison website mysupermarket.co.uk a typical family of four will have to spend an extra £572 this year to buy the same food items as last year.
Many basic food items have seen even more dramatic rises with the price of dairy products up 20%, bread up by 12.5% and meat by 11.3% over the last year.
As I have written about on here I have been trying hard over the last couple of months to reduce my food costs and so far it looks like all my savings will be offset against the higher prices due to inflation. Of course I would be paying far more if I had not changed my spending habits.
