Cheap lunch for two

We went out for lunch today with some family that we currently having staying with us. Knowing that I am on a tight budget at the moment we chose our local Wetherspoons as they are known for their good food but at reasonable prices. We had also kept some vouchers that came through the post the other week which reduced the total cost down to £10.54 for a meal for two (including drinks).

If we had not had the vouchers then the cost would have been £11.98, so they saved us £1.44 which I am counting towards my target. In reality the savings from simply choosing Wetherspoons as a cheap place to eat were far more as similar lunches have cost us £15-£20 in the past.

It’s cheaper to be vegetarian

Annual food product inflation has reached 8.4% – the highest since records began in 1986 – according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The main driver behind the soaring costs is the rising price of meat in reaction to the increasing cost of animal feed that farmers have incurred this winter so it’s bad news for us non-vegetarians!

According to research from the price comparison website mysupermarket.co.uk a typical family of four will have to spend an extra £572 this year to buy the same food items as last year.

Every little helps

Had to do the regular online food shop again tonight and managed to save 85p by switching from a premium brand of Orange juice to the supermarket own brand and £1.13 from MySupermarket‘s suggestion to swap Ariel for Persil as the later was on special offer.

Whilst £1.98 may not sound like a massive saving if I save just that amount every fortnight that’s over £50 for the year for giving up nothing as I’m sure the Orange juice will taste exactly the same and I wouldn’t have a clue what the difference between Ariel and Persil is!

The high price of power

I received the winter electricity bill today and it was a shocker at over £260 for the quarter. Whilst it may seem quite low in comparison to other bills I only have a small 2 bed apartment and rarely use the heaters opting instead for an extra layer of clothing.

Cheers Virgin Wines

Emergency rationing has been in place the last couple of weeks as I have been running dangerously low on red wine. Ok, so I admit there are bigger crises in the world right now but in my flat this has been quickly escalating into a major issue, thankfully Virgin Wines came to my rescue!
