‘Only fools rush in’ – and doing so cost me £5

‘Only fools rush in’, ‘if it looks too good to be true it normally is’ and ‘he who is greedy is always in want’ are three sayings I learnt the true meaning of today. As I juggled the ironing, cooking my dinner and watching the football at the same time I tried to add making money to that list by placing a bet on West Brom to qualify as they went 3-1 up.

Unfortunately this was a task too many as in my rush to place the bet I accidentally backed Bristol Rovers to qualify instead of West Brom, oops! With only 20 minutes of the match remaining and little chance of getting back into the game tearing up a £5 note would have been as good an investment at that moment.

Sensational Barnsley take £10 of my money

When I bet £10 on Chelsea to progress past Barnsley I thought I had one of the safest investments outside the Government owned Northern Rock. However Kayode Odejayi clearly had other ideas when his second half header dumped Chelsea out of the FA Cup.

I may have ended up £10 down as a result but Barnsley proved that with a bit of hard work anything is possible, so I take it as a lesson learnt that if I work hard I too can achieve my Millionaire Adventure dream.

Man Utd Insurance policy pays out

As I have written on here many times I use betting as a form of insurance on Manchester United’s results. This is done by laying money against Man Utd winning and today I did just that by staking £4 at odds of 1.16 (decimal odds).

For those of you that don’t follow football they lost to Portsmouth today in the FA Cup quarter final so I won £23.75 (after commission). Whilst this helps my MillionaireAdventure it of course does not really compensate for the disappointment of Man Utd being knocked out of the cup.

How big is the housing bubble?

Halifax released it’s latest monthly survey on house prices today which showed prices across the UK falling by 0.3% in February, taking the annual rate of inflation down to 4.2%. This now means the average home in the UK costs £196,649 (or at least it does according to the Halifax, other surveys have different findings). What it clearly shows is that the housing market has slowed over the past couple of months but they believe that house prices can remain flat if the economy and employment levels continue to grow. Now that is a big “if” and not one I would personally like to have my house staked on.

World’s richest man is…

Warren Buffet who has seen is fortune increase by $10bn in the past year to an estimated $62bn. Bill Gates has dropped down to 3rd place after 13 straight years being the richest man on the planet, largely due to the 15% decrease in Microsoft shares following their bid for Yahoo, although he is still up by $2bn year on year.

Second place was taken by the Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim Helu whose fortune rose by $11bn to $60bn this year. There is now just $4bn between the top three so it’s anybody’s guess who will be the richest man next year.
